Today is the 100th installment of Vince Dorse’s entertaining, all-ages webcomic Untold Tales of Bigfoot!
To mark this milestone, I’ve been working my felt off to complete a new custom piece, a four-legged friend for Bigfoot, the puppy who lost his way — Scout!
Constructed over a wire armature (to keep him from being too wobbly), Scout’s posed in his very best “trained hunting dog” posture, ready for the next time that cranky raccoon shows his face. I flipped through dozens of images of Scout from Vince’s comic as a reference and went back and forth on what type of facial expression to give Scout (he has so many). In the end, we decided that leaving Scout without a specific facial expression allowed him to express a wider range of emotions; worry, calm, curiosity, melancholy, etc.
One of the most difficult parts of Scout to felt was his ears. I wanted them to be thin so they would flop around, but they are brown on the outside and pink on the inside and making sure there’s no wool bleed from the opposite side can be tricky.
As with his cryptid companion, I gave Scout doll eyes. I think they add great dimension to his face, catch the light nicely, and tie his design with Bigfoot’s.
An extra little detail added to Scout is his dog tag. There are a few places on the web you can get a tag like this, but this one’s custom made by Tipsy Whimsey who does great work and has a quick turnaround time.
