Something Felted This Way Comes

Happy Halloween!

Witch-Run-Red-Run-02

I was commissioned to make a Halloween Witch for a friend after she saw my Little Witch Helga from a few years ago. The only direction she gave me was “make her face scary” but she liked the design of Helga. The new witch got the same candy corn hat and a similar body as Helga. However, this witch has also got a one of a kind handmade broom!

Here’s some progress photos:

She’s all packed up and ready to go! My friend loved her! Whew!  There are more photos of her in the gallery to check out. I hope you all had a great Halloween!

Needle Felted Edgar Allan Poe

Run Red Run Needle Felted Edgar Allan Poe

I think melancholy sums up my most recent project.  Edgar Allan Poe has always struck me as a sad figure–maybe that’s the price he had to pay for his genius.  There was the movie, The Raven, recently released, which uses the last mysterious days of his life as the setting for intrigue and…murder.  I think John Cusack had the look of Poe down pat.  Something about the eyes, again, sad.  I tried to capture that very same sadness in my feltie’s eyes.  And of course, the coffin also adds a bit of the macabre to the piece.

Poe was another team up with illustrator Vince Dorse.  To see the sketch that I worked from, head over to his blog and take a look.  And go to my gallery to see more photos.

Needle Felted Bloo and Reaper Go Home

Run Red Run Needle Felted Bloo Grim Reaper sold Good news, everyone…two more felted cuties found a new home. One is the Grim Reaper that I teamed up with illustrator Vince Dorse to make. The other feltie was a reproduction of Bloo from Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. I just made Bloo to blow off some steam, but someone saw him and decided they had to have him.  I hope he behaves in his new home.

In related news, Bloo turned out to be a hit!  I took a commission to make a second Bloo. He’s not an exact replica of his earlier brother, but no two felts are the same. I’ll put some pictures of the new Bloo once he’s complete…

Run Red Run Needle Felted Grim Reaper Death

Well gang, my time with SpookyTime Jingles is winding down. This is my last month working with the great ladies at STJ. My latest project, the Grim Reaper, will be for sale at spookytimejingles.com until 2/12/12. Check it out.

What does my leaving STJ mean? It just means that I’m busy at home and work. I’m still needle felting though. I have a project in the works right now. I won’t go into too much detail yet, but I will tell you that it’s the sort of creature you’d seeing running across the English moors in the full moon light. I’ll show you soon.

I’m also focusing on commission work. So, if there’s something special you’d like for yourself or for a gift, get in touch with me and we’ll work out an arrangement!

Needle Felted Grim Reaper

Run Red Run Needle Felted Grim ReaperAAAAHHHHH! It’s here again! You know, that creepy time each month when STJ updates its product selections! AAAAAAHHHHH!  I don’t know if I can stand the suspense of waiting until midnight Jan 13th to see all of the awesome new artwork up for sale. Well, in case you’re as impatient as I am, I’m giving you a little sneak peek at what I’m offering for sale this month.

Say hello to my little Grim Reaper!
Based on artwork by illustrator Vince Dorse (check out the design on his blog), this needle-felted fiend solemnly wanders the globe, or maybe just your mantle, collecting its dues…

If you would like to purchase this guy, head over to SpookyTime Jingles to get all the info.  Also, check out my gallery or Flickr page for more photos!

Needle Felted Zombie and Day of the Dead Skeleton For Sale!

Wow! Has it been a whole month already? Where does the time go?  Well, as you know, the 13th of the month is that magical time when SpookyTime Jingles gets a total update with all kinds of awesome new artwork!

So, at midnight on November 13th I’ll be placing not one, but two custom-made one-of-a-kind needle felted dolls on sale! The two pieces I’ve created this month are a brain-munching zombie and, to honor the Dia de los Muertos celebration observed on November 1 and 2, a Day of the Dead inspired skeleton.

For some reason I keep thinking that perhaps the zombie was an accountant in his former life. And maybe his name was Frank. But he’s dead now, or rather UNdead, and looking for brains. Speaking of brains, the design for the zombie came straight from my brain to the wool… so, there are no working sketches this time.

Needle Felted Headless Horseman Design

As I’ve done for the last few dolls, I’m posting Vince Dorse’s concept sketch for the Headless Horseman.  This image (along with some other, rough sketches) is what I used for reference while felting the doll.  Vince has a step-by-step on his process blog that outlines how he put this illustration together.  If you’d like to take a look, it’s here at this link: Vince Dorse Art Blog: The Headless Horseman
